It is an excellent cross-linking agent for chitosan. Genipin: non-toxic cross-linking agent Chitosan is most reactively crosslinked by covalent bonds in the presence of aldehydes such as formaldehyde, glyoxal and glutaraldehyde. The problem with these products is that they are toxic and polluting. Genipin is a natural and biodegradable alternative to synthetic crosslinking agents. Its non-toxicity and good biocompatibility allow numerous applications in the biomedical and food fields. Mode of operation It reacts spontaneously with chitosan to form heterocyclic amines. The covalent crosslinking that occurs between genipin and chitosan greatly increases the mechanical properties of chitosan films. Genipin acts as a dialdehyde and its condensation products are much more stable than glutaraldehyde. It should be noted that the degree of crosslinking of chitosan by genipin is pH-dependent.
