The Rule

Consignments of chitin, chitosan and their derivatives for importation into or transit through the Union shall be accompanied by health certificates.

 

The factory is EU registered

In order to comply with the latest set of rules relative to chitosan importation, we now provide health certificates fully compliant with Europe’s customs regulation.

 

Types of veterinary certificates

For non food applications : chitosan is considered as an animal by product and the veterinary certificate must be compliant with the Commission Regulation (EU) No 142/2011 implementing the Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009. Pharma, cosmetics, industrial and agriculture projects essentially fall into the scope of this regulation.

For human food applications : chitosan  is considered as a product of animal origin intended for human consumption. Certificate requirements are laid down in Regulation (EU) 2016/759. Note : By extension, products certified for human consumption can also be used in non food projects.


Forms of chitin

Chitin occurs in three polymorphic solid state forms designated as α, β, and γ chitin which differ in their degree of hydration, size of unit cell, and number of chitin chains per unit cell. α-Chitin is most abundant and is found in shellfish exoskeletons and fungal cell walls. β-Chitin is mainly found in squid pens and diatoms while γ-chitin may be predominantly found in squid and cuttlefish stomach lining.
